THE HOLY CUP

THE LEGEND

There is a legend about the Holy Grail or cup which was used by Jesus at the Last Supper. This cup is said to possess miraculous powers. Every human being is searching for this Holy cup.

As all legends, this one contains a hidden or psychological meaning. We can keep searching for a physical cup or we can try to understand the psychological or spiritual meaning.

What is a cup? It is a container, a recipient or vessel. Now, this Holy cup is able to contain the wine or the blood of the Son of God,  as symbolized in the Last Supper. We know that this blood or wine corresponds to Divine Love.

So, what is the cup that can contain Divine Love. It must be the human heart or will that is empty of all selfish impurities.

A human being is simply a recipient or cup that receives Love and Wisdom.

CLEANING THE CUP

And, if you still doubt what the cup refers to, read your Bible.

In Matthew 23:25, Jesus actually refers to the cup:

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.

There it is. The cup is our inner being, which is composed of our heart [will] and mind [understanding].

So, on the outside or in the appearances of the world, we can appear as good human beings and do all that SEEMS to be good. But, if our motives are not pure, then we are only fooling others and our self.

The only thing that matters is the real essence of our inner being. This is who and what we really are.

In order to be able to contain the Divine Love of God, our heart [will] must be empty of all selfish and egotistical intentions, motives and desires.

JOY AND SORROW

The more we realize that we are nothing in our own self, the more empty our cup becomes and the more Divine Love it can contain.

Now, while we are still in the duality of ego consciousness, we fluctuate between joy and sorrow. Sorrow is the means by which we clean our cup and increase its size.

Through sorrow, we go deeper within our heart and realize that we are nothing but a recipient or vessel.

We are imploding within the fractal of our heart; we are getting closer to God.

As long as we are arrogant and believe that we deserve any merit, we are like the Pharisees. They were self-righteous; they thought that because they were performing all the religious rituals that they were better than others. But the outside of their cup did not correspond to its inside. The inside was still greedy and self-indulgent.

God is omniscient; He knows the nature of our cup. And we must do our good in secret. We do not need to show it to the world.

So, sorrow is very useful because it shows us the Truth about our self. And that Truth is that we are just a vessel for the Love of God.

When we are in sorrow, we are experiencing the empty cup itself. If we simply stop identifying with the cup, the Love of God will begin to flow and we will experience joy.

We now understand what our spiritual journey is about. We experience all kinds of inner hurt, misery, poverty, disease; we lose our friends and family members. But this drama is designed by God for a very great purpose. This is how we create and purify our cup or heart so we can receive Divine Love itself. We are imploding within. But most of us are scared to feel the depth of our heart. We feel a very deep hurt within. But this hurt or this emptying of the cup is how we approach the secret place of God.

"Then a woman said, Speak to us of Joy and Sorrow. And he answered: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked. And the self-same well from which your laughter rises was oftentimes filled with your tears. And how else can it be? The deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced. When the treasure-keeper lifts you to weigh his gold and his silver, needs must your joy or your sorrow rise or fall." Khalil Gibran
